Minnesota, Baudette June 29 to July 6

Way up north at the Lake Of The Wood in Baudette, Minnesota.  We are staying in the Timber Mill Park a city campground.  This is a very nice, but small RV Park.  The Park is located on the USA side of the Rainy River.  The river has been overflowing its banks for a week now, but we are in no danger of getting wet.  That is except for the rain that hits us each day.  The wind was quite bad for about three days here, so we did not get to kayak but only one time. You hear people talk about the Minnesota mosquitoes and how bad they are,  well you heard right.  They are very bad, especially this year with all the rain and standing water.  But I can live with that for a while.  Also they do spray the city park so not too bad at the campground.

We took a drive up to Warroad one day and saw more problems with the flooding.  One of the sandbag dikes built around the Lake of the Woods.  Guess the water level got quite high for a few days.

We stopped to visit the Marvin Window Information center.  They have been making windows here for a long time.  I got to talk to Bill, a 3rd generation Marvin, for a long time.  Interesting man with many stories.

I was going to look up the names of all the wild flowers Kay took pictures of, but could not find half of them in any book so I gave up the idea.  This sure looks like an Iris.

Once again I did not listen to my wife.  She told me not to drive up so far to unload the kayaks, but as a man, thinking I know more than she does about how soft the ground was, I kept going.  Once again when we got out of the truck, and I picked myself off the ground because she hit me in the back of the head and said," I told you so"  Anyway, the more I tried to back up, the deeper the front end sunk into the mud.  Now this ain't just ordinary mud,  it was black and slicker than sheep snot.  Finally I had to use my camper leveling boards to back up on to get some traction to get out.  Needless to say, Kay was not a happy camper with the whole ordeal.  Me, I was just happy to get out because we were a long way from anywhere that could help us.  The picture below is the tracks I left, and some of the boards left in the mud.

Now this one I have to comment on.  Where else but Minnesota would you find an ATV with a snowplow on it.
