Kentucky, Park City October 24 - 31

Our travels have now taken us to the wonderful state of Kentucky.  The leaves on the trees are really turning to beautiful colors.  The Diamond Caverns Campground where we are staying, is very close to Mammoth Cave National Park.  This is our first time in this part of Kentucky, and we will do a lot of exploring the countryside.  That is one nice thing about being in different parts of this wonderful USA, seeing the local country.  We also connected again with Mike and Joan, some friends we meet back in Monticello, IN.  We did a bunch of things with them.

This is what the country roads look like in this area.
One day we took Mike and Joan up to Nolin Lake State Park to kayak.
Here is Joan getting ready for me to launch her.  She had never been in one before.  Kay is already out in the water waiting for her.
Joan got the hang of kayaking very fast.   She and Kay took off up the lake, and we thought they would never get back.

This is the first time for Mike to try out the kayaks also.  They both really liked them.  I think we got another couple hooked on kayaking.

Nolin Lake was a nice place to take them kayaking for the first time.
I guess this goose was a local guy.  He sure was not afraid of us at all.
On the way to Nolin Lake, we had to have a ride on the Green River Ferry.  It was also the pick-up spot where Kay and I got out of the Green River on our kayak trip later in the week.
We had to stop and take pictures of the tobacco hanging in this old barn.
Mammoth Cave National Park preserves the cave system and a part of the Green River valley and hilly country of south central Kentucky. This is the world's longest known cave system, with more than 390 miles explored. Early guide Stephen Bishop called the cave a "grand, gloomy and peculiar place," but its vast chambers and complex labyrinths have earned its name—Mammoth.   The tour we took was a 2 hour, 2 mile walk with 440 stairs.  We went 300 feet under ground.  The tour guide told us that during the Civil War, both the Northern and Southern soldiers toured the cave at the same time.  The only bad thing about the tour, was my camera's battery ran out so I did not get any pictures in the cave.  You will have to come here and see it for your self.

After a hard day of caving, Kay fixed dinner for Mike, Joan and Me.  Mike must have liked it very much, for this was him about a half hour after he ate.
The next day the four of us did a tour of the Corvette assembly plant.  They would not let us take any pictures inside the plant.  It was a very interesting tour.  I was hoping they would give me one of the new Z06 Corvettes.  It has a 532 cu in motor in it.  Top speed about 220 MPH.

Kay and I are going to kayak the Green River.  This is how the road looks on our way to our put-in point at the Dennison Ferry.
We passed this house on the way.  Was hopping to see some old guy on the porch playing the banjo, and sipping some white-lightening.  Guess he was in taking a nap, or out hunting squirrils.

It was fun getting the kayaks down to the river.  There were two sets of stairs to get down.
We got my kayak down, now we have to go back up and get Kay's.  There were two girls with canoes, all packed up for a two day trip down the river.
It was a bit difficult getting into the kayaks at this put-in point.  I was holding Kay's kayak, as she was holding onto me to get in.
Kay took this picture after she got into the river.  You can see Mike standing on the stairs taking pictures.  You can also see the set of stairs we had to bring the kayaks down.
Mike took this picture of the river as he stood on the stairs.  It sure was a great river to kayak.
We are finally under way down the river.
We are gone.  Mike drove the truck back to the Green River Ferry, where we are going to get out.  We had parked his car there on our way up to the river.
We found this little cave to kayak in.  It was not very long, but was interesting.  I had to put my light on to see the end.
Kay also made it into the cave.
Kay loves to take pictures of leaves, flowers, trees, grass, guess just about anything.  She does have some very beautiful pictures.
If you wonder why I am grinning,  I am doing one of the things I love most, kayaking.

On Saturday, the campground had a Chili and grilled cheese dinner for all the campers.  They also had a live band come in and play country music for us.  They were quite good.  We met some friends for dinner.  Starting on the left is Jerry and Sandra, in the middle is Joan and Mike, and on the right is Walter and Claudia.
