Mississippi Biloxi February 20 - 27

Biloxi, Mississippi  the home of Keelser Air Force Base.  I was stationed here for 1 1/2 years studying electronics (1959 - 1960).   Now that was a long time ago and a lot of water has gone down the creek.
All the beaches look the same, but that is about all.  It sure has changed in 52 years.  We are now at Martin Lake Resort just north of Biloxi.  Here is a link to the campground if you want to see more information.  http://martinlake.com/

The bridge across Biloxi Bay with one of the new casinos in the background.
This is a story I have to tell.  We decided we should go see one of the Biloxi Mardi Gras parades on Fat Tuesday.  Finding a place to park that big truck of mine is kind of difficult. There were about 100,000 other folks trying to do the same thing.  After driving around for quite a while we came around this one corner, I spotted a place to drive up over the curb and park in front of some trucks.  Kay didn't want me to park there because we'd be blocking those other trucks a little.  I parked anyway and got out and asked these guys if it would be ok to block them while we went to see the parade.  They said no problem and even wanted us to come and have some BBQ with them since we would have to wait for about 2 hours before the parade to start.   We had just eaten so us Northern folks thanked them Southern folks very much.  Now that is what I call real Southern hospitality.  Just one example of the wonderful people we've met while traveling in the south.
USAF Color Guard started out the parade.
There were a lot of floats in this Mardi Gras parade
It was cool seeing the National Guard pulling some of the floats.
 Happy Guards

Every float that went by threw out many beads.  The kids across the street had their share of them.
This officer was also having lots of fun.
Now here is another story for you.  It was getting quite warm standing along the fence watching all the floats go by and collecting the beads they threw out.  After a while I would call out to the people on the floats " I want beer not beads"  This guy heard my plea and gave me a very cold Coors.  I tell you it was one of the best beers that I have had in a long time.  Even if I had to share it with Kay.
As you can see, I got my share of beads as well as a hat and t-shirt.  The Coors was the best of all.
This is as close to the base as we could get.  I really wanted to get on and see show Kay where I lived.
This lighthouse is in the middle of HWY 90 which is the road that follows the beaches of the gulf.  They say it is the most photographed thing in Biloxi.  I think I have a picture of it from back in 1960.
Everywhere they were decorated for Mardi Gras.  You should have seen the inside of the visitor centers.  Don't know why I didn't get any pictures.  There were elaborate costumes and trees decorated like Christmas except in purple, green and gold for Mardi Gras.  This wreath is just a small sample.
We stopped at a visitor center down by the Gulf and a trolley tour was just getting ready to leave.  We decided that would be a great way to see the city.
Kay waiting for the tour to begin.

There was some beautiful architecture in the old parts of Biloxi.  The next several pictures are of some of our favorites.  What  we don't have pictures of are the empty lots near the Gulf where the houses are gone due to Katrina.  The tour guide lived through it and she told us many stories of what the people of Mississippi experienced.  It is just hard to imagine what the devastation must have been like.

Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral has a very interesting history.   If you want to learn more about this click on the link

A mural at the corner of one of the buildings depicting the harsh conditions in the Gulf.

One of the last stops was at a memorial garden dedicated to those lost in Katrina.
Fishing pier across from the Biloxi visitor center.
While in Biloxi we enjoyed the casinos and had some pretty good meals.  Our favorite was the Palace casino.   It was the only non-smoking casino on the Gulf.
Monday morning when we were trying to pack up to leave for Pass Christian the rains came.  I was reminded of when Marilyn and I had to pack up and move from Halifax before hurricane Danny.
